Abstract

Scaling up microbial peroxide-producing cells (MPPCs) for industrial applications requires overcoming technical and economic barriers. This chapter explores key factors influencing MPPC scalability, including reactor design, microbial stability, energy efficiency, and integration with advanced oxidation processes (AOPs). Existing reactor configurations such as batch, continuous-flow, and membrane bioreactors (MBRs) are evaluated for their suitability in large-scale wastewater treatment. Challenges such as biofilm management, electrode fouling, and limited peroxide yield must be addressed for real-world implementation. Recent advancements in nanostructured catalysts, genetic engineering of electroactive microbes, and co-culture systems have improved MPPC efficiency. However, optimizing system cost-effectiveness, operational stability, and pollutant specificity remains a major research focus. Hybrid technologies combining MPPCs with Fenton’s reaction, ozonation, and photocatalysis offer enhanced degradation capabilities but require further testing for industrial applications. Future directions include machine learning-based process optimization, modular reactor designs, and renewable energy integration. The long-term success of MPPCs will depend on policy support, commercial investments, and interdisciplinary research efforts to establish a sustainable framework for large-scale wastewater treatment.
