Abstract

The response of magnetic nanoparticles to external fields is not only of great interest for theoretical sciences but also of immense practical relevance. Previously, attention has been focused mainly on magnetically hard nanoparticles that are well suited for a variety of mechanical applications. Recent years, however, have seen various promising biomedical applications that have sparked renewed interest to study more intensively also the internal magnetization dynamics within the nanoparticles. Here, we review these recent developments and open challenges in theory and simulation of magnetization dynamics of magnetic nanoparticles in viscous media and set these in context with more traditional approaches.
