Abstract

The chapter considers the difficulties that learning chemistry presents to people who are blind or have low vision (BLV). It also presents practical strategies for mitigating these difficulties, including technological provisions that provide an alternative to being able to see. The author highlights the very low incidence of BLV students pursuing chemistry after school which is associated with a paucity of resources developed for learning at college and university. The chapter concludes with an account of how the author, a former professor of chemistry and himself blind, has conducted his career in chemistry including teaching in labs.
