Abstract

Meaningful laboratory teaching is key to chemistry education at all levels however it is often cited as a key barrier to participation by disabled students and other diverse student groups. We discuss the nature of the chemistry laboratory environment from the perspective of Universal Design for Learning and consider the adaptations and accommodations that benefit students in different educational settings including outreach. We report the results of a small-scale study into the perceptions of physically disabled students in the laboratory and provide a personal account from a graduate who has experienced barriers to access in a higher education setting.
