Abstract

Methane is a strong greenhouse gas, and its efficient catalytic combustion plays an important role in controlling atmospheric pollution and coping with climate change. Catalytic combustion technology can remarkably reduce the light-off temperature of methane and decrease the generation of NO and CO. Therefore, a more thorough understanding is still necessary for the rational development of methane oxidation catalysts that feature enhanced intrinsic activity for the advancement of this technology. In this review article, two mainstream types of catalysts (noble metal-based catalysts and non-noble metal-based catalysts) for methane combustion are summarized, their anti-poisoning abilities and involved reaction mechanisms are discussed, and future development directions of such a catalytic strategy are proposed.
