A conserved glutamate orchestrates transitions between catalytic intermediates in [NiFe]-hydrogenase
Abstract
A conserved glutamate in the second coordination sphere controls [NiFe]-hydrogenase catalysis by enabling the Ni a –L1 → Ni a –L2 transition. Its absence disrupts outer sphere protein rearrangements required for proton transfer and efficient catalysis.
