Abstract

ABSTRACT A novel higher order local time‐stepping (LTS) technique for the discontinuous Galerkin time‐domain–finite difference time‐domain (DGTD–FDTD) method is proposed to accelerate transient electromagnetic simulations. The higher order equation is applied to the boundary elements or grids between LTS classes to reduce approximation error caused by the LTS. The proposed higher order LTS is incorporated in DGTD–FDTD to avoid the global decrease of the minimum time step and thus boost simulation efficiency, which has not been studied before. Through one numerical example, the accuracy and efficiency of the presented method are demonstrated, showing its ability to model practical multiscale targets.
