Electrifying the trucking sector in the Lower Rhine region – challenges and opportunities
Abstract
The decarbonization of road freight transport is a cornerstone of Germany’s climate strategy. In the Lower Rhine region, one of Europe’s most important logistics hubs, the electrification of heavy-duty vehicles is expected to drive electricity demand up by approximately 8.8 TWh by 2045, requiring up to 4 GVA of additional grid connection capacity. This transformation entails significant challenges, as logistics companies are typically small- and medium-sized, operating under tight margins. In parallel, grid operators face long planning and permitting cycles, while municipalities, property developers, and regulators are critical actors in shaping suitable conditions for the rapid expansion of charging infrastructure. This paper presents an integrated perspective on these challenges and formulates stakeholder-specific recommendations. Key findings highlight the importance of early coordination among logistics operators, site owners, network operators, and municipalities, as well as the urgent need for transparent regulatory frameworks and investment support. Furthermore, shared infrastructure models, demand-oriented grid connection strategies, and structured information exchange across the sector are identified as critical enablers. The insights derived from the Lower Rhine region provide a blueprint for other logistics clusters across Europe.
