Towards an optimal dual-ban monopole antenna for Wi-Fi applications
Abstract
In light of the persistent demand for compact and efficient monopole antenna designs in new generation communication systems, this paper summarizes the design and analysis of a total of five monopole antenna models, in order to fill the gap in researc h in relation to the optimization of dual band antenna designs which has been ignored in previous studies. Two of these models are based on simple monopole structures. The remaining three models incorporate different configuration slots in the design, in order to examine whether this has any clear effect on the frequency response of the antenna design. This study covers the gap in research by improving the operation of impedance matching on dual band designs for Wi-Fi and Forthcoming 5G systems. The antenna designs are all made on an FR-4 substrate of 1.6 mm thickness, with a dielectric constant of 4.3. The proposed designs are manufactured and made without the utilization of enhancement techniques and optimization techniques being employed, other than examination of the S11 and VSWR performance of the individual designs. The T shaped configuration was found to give the best performance of all the designs examined, with S11 readings of nearly −28 dB recorded on the 2.4 GHz band, and values recorded of near −42.5 dB for the 5 GHz band. This response shows that a good balance of impedance is exhibited and shows that the proposed design is applicable in this use due to its dual band functionality. Hence the antenna will work effectively in both WLAN and emerging 5 G Communication systems.
