Fuzzy Moving Surface Second‐Order Super Twisting Sliding Mode Control for Direct Power Control of Shunt Active Power Filter
Abstract
ABSTRACT The present paper proposes Fuzzy Moving Surface Second‐Order Super Twisting Sliding Mode Control (FMS‐SO‐ST‐SMC) for Direct Power Control (DPC) of a Shunt Active Power Filter (SAPF). This method offers flexibility and high robustness against external disturbances with low sensitivity to changes in system parameters. In addition, using fuzzy logic for rotating sliding surfaces, the dynamic response and convergence time are effectively improved with higher tracking accuracy, lower chattering, and smoother control commands compared to conventional SMC. Furthermore, the proposed scheme decreases the power ripples, besides the simpler converter design, thanks to the fixed switching frequency. The proposed control is deeply investigated through different practical implementations using a 3‐KW DSP‐based real‐time SAPF test bench. The results validate the excellent and standard harmonic compensation that appeared via the grid‐side current's total harmonic distortion (THD), reduced from 24.38% to 3.06%. Also, dynamic evaluations confirm faster responses, especially under high‐harmonic‐polluted non‐linear load currents. Several various experimental performance evaluations confirm the effectiveness and superiority of the proposed method for better and improved performance enhancement usable on novel energy systems and applications, industrial systems, compensators, power electronic converters, devices, and processes.
