Integrated orthodontic and surgical treatment of bilateral condylar resorption secondary to rheumatoid arthritis: A case report
Abstract
This case report outlines the diagnoses and management of a patient with bilateral condylar resorption secondary to rheumatoid arthritis. It follows a female patient through her 24 months of orthodontic and surgical treatment and 1 year of retention following debond. The patient presented with the diagnostic signs of condylar resorption including worsening chin recession and anterior open bite. The patient and treatment team goals focused on restoring both form and function through a combination of surgical and orthodontic treatment. After orthodontic decompensation, surgical treatment was performed which included custom bilateral temporomandibular joint replacement, Lefort I osteotomy, and genioplasty. Surgical treatment, combined with orthodontics, helped restore the patient to esthetic norms, with successful function. Surgical and orthodontic results remain stable 1 year after debonding.
