Early Results of the long-term NIS TAPAS – A Prospective, Multicentre Cohort Study in Children and Adults with Seasonal Allergic Rhinitis
Abstract
Aim of the study: The 5-years cohort study TAPAS (Tyrosine Allergoid Paediatric and Adult Study) was designed to demonstrate non-inferiority in terms of efficacy and safety in children compared to adults treated with microcrystalline tyrosine-adsorbed allergoids (MATAs) for their tree or grass pollen allergy in a perennial setting. Here, we present the preliminary findings after 1 year. Methods: Prior starting allergen immunotherapy (AIT) patients≥ 5 years who were treated with MATAs for their allergy to grass or birch, alder and hazel pollen could be included in the non-interventional study (NIS). During the treatment phase (3 years) daily symptom scores and medication usage during the respective pollen seasons were collected over 4 weeks via eDiary. Furthermore, at start and during the study, patients retrospectively reported about severity and frequency of their allergic/asthma symptoms. Results: 129 children/adolescents and 191 adults were included with a good adherence after 1 year of treatment (86%). The primary endpoint, mean combined symptom and medication score (CSMS) values did not differ significantly between minors and adults in the first pollen season, after treatment induction. The mean rhinitis score after 1 year of AIT was significantly reduced compared to baseline by 29% in all patients (p< 0.001), the mean conjunctivitis score by 33% in adults versus 38% (p
