Abstract

Background: Neonatal calf diarrhea is a common and potentially life-threatening condition in young calves. Conventional treatment often relies on antibiotics, mostly prescribed based on empirical observation rather than a confirmed diagnosis. Addressing the life-threatening risks of antibiotic misuse, homeopathy offers a safe and effective alternative for managing this clinical condition in neonatal calves. The present work was a collaborative research project undertaken by CCRH with IVRI. Objective: To evaluate the effect of Echinacea angustifolia (Q, 30C and 200C), Veratrum album (Q, 30C and 200C), and Arsenicum album (6C, 30C and 200C) in neonatal calf diarrhea. Methods: Neonatal dairy cattle calves (1–28 days) of either sex ( n = 78: n = 6 per arm) suffering from diarrhea of infectious/non-infectious origin were included in this therapeutic trial and were randomized into ten treatment (including standard antibiotic therapy) and three control groups (healthy, diseased, or placebo control). Stools of all calves were subjected to bacteriological culture examination. Antibiotic sensitivity tests on E. coli isolates were performed to observe distinct Zones of Inhibition. Improvement in clinical signs and symptoms, along with haemato-biochemical and oxidative stress parameters, was assessed before and after 5 days of therapy (days 0 and 7). Results: Calves receiving Echinacea 200C recorded the best recovery by the second day in clinical signs and symptoms, and blood biochemical and oxidative stress parameters. Faster recovery was observed in Veratrum album Q by the 2.5th day, compared with Veratrum album 30C and 200C recovery by the 3.1st day and standard antibiotic recovery by the 3.6th day. Arsenicum album demonstrated clinical and hematological improvements at potency 6C within 1.6 days of therapy. Arsenicum album 6C, Echinacea 200C, and Veratrum album Q outperformed the ceftriaxone antibiotic group. Conclusion: Arsenicum album 6C may be recommended to treat neonatal calf diarrhea for rapid resolution of clinical signs and symptoms in the context of emerging antimicrobial resistance.
