Abstract

All articles of this category (opens in new window) Background: The QT interval in the ECG is a central parameter for assessing electrical heart activity, and an altered QT interval is associated with an increased risk for cardiac arrhythmias. Since the QT interval depends on the heart rate, a frequency correction is performed using the Bazett formula, which has been derived from a few healthy adults and tends to overestimate and lead to overdiagnosis of Long QT syndrome at high heart rates. Methods: Manual analysis of 1,036 resting ECGs from subjects aged 6 to 47 years. QTc times were calculated using all 28 known formulas. The correlation between QTc and heart rate was analyzed for the overall range and in four heart rate categories (
