Indoor Thermal Comfort Assessment Using BIM-IoT Integration in a Web-Based Visualization Platform
Abstract
The building sector is a major source of energy consumption to achieve occupant thermal comfort. Maintaining indoor thermal comfort in modern buildings is challenging due to traditional manual measurement methods, which lack real-time capabilities and spatial variations. To tackle this challenge, this paper presents an Internet of Things (IoT)-based approach for assessing indoor thermal comfort within a scalable cloud-integrated architecture. Real-time data on thermal comfort parameters are collected through IoT devices and stored in a cloud-based database. When the user retrieves the data, they are analyzed, and the thermal comfort index is calculated using simplified predicted mean vote (sPMV) model. The results, visualized on a web-based platform, provide interactive graphical representations of indoor conditions within a BIM environment. This system enables real-time, location-specific evaluation, allowing building managers to make timely adjustments that optimize thermal comfort and energy efficiency, demonstrating the effectiveness of integrating BIM and IoT for smart building management.
