Abstract

Bringing building information modeling (BIM) into communication with operational and asset data is vital for successful digital twins in the architecture, engineering, and construction industry. Although digital twins have been widely deployed in managing built assets, significant challenges remain in connecting BIM model objects with the varied datasets required for real-time monitoring and decision-making. This paper proposes a comprehensive framework for BIM-to-asset data integration in digital twins, highlighting the role of the asset information model as defined by the ISO 19650 standard. Incorporating key concepts such as organizational, project, asset, and exchange information requirements, the framework systematically aligns BIM objects and asset data. Moreover, the paper introduces a high-level ontology to map BIM model objects to asset data attributes, ensuring semantic coherence and interoperability. This research bridges a significant gap in BIM-to-asset data integration for digital twins, enhancing data accessibility and operational efficiency in asset management.
