Exploring the Impact of Green Walls on Indoor Humidity and Temperature across Different Environmental Conditions
Abstract
This study examines the impact of green walls on indoor temperature and humidity under varying environmental conditions. Experiments were conducted in a controlled chamber at 75°F and 85°F with constant 40% humidity, alternating the operation of mechanical systems to simulate different conditions. Results showed a notable cooling effect from both the green wall and a baseline setup containing the frame and irrigation system. However, when the mechanical equipment was off, humidity levels rose significantly regardless of the presence of the green wall. This increase was attributed to poor ventilation and accumulated moisture. The findings indicate that while green walls can effectively reduce indoor temperature, they may contribute to higher humidity without active ventilation. To maximize their benefits, green wall systems should be integrated with adequate ventilation strategies. Future studies should isolate the humidity effects of green walls and assess their long-term impact on comfort and energy efficiency.
