Proactive Quality Control for Robotics-Based Manufacturing of Industrialized Construction: A Case Study of Wood-Framed Construction Panels
Abstract
The rise of robotics is transforming industrialized construction (IC), shifting from labor-intensive processes to technology-driven solutions. However, achieving consistent product quality remains challenging due to difficulties in adapting to material variations in large-scale assemblies. This study introduces an innovative, proactive quality control framework for robotic IC manufacturing. The framework employs advanced scanning technologies to precisely capture and model construction material variations, which are then utilized by an advanced robotic simulation system to proactively accommodate these variations during manufacturing process development. By simulating the physical behavior of diverse construction components under various assembly conditions, the framework ensures high-quality outcomes. Promising real-world tests on a wood-framed wall panel demonstrated significant improvements in both efficiency and product quality, highlighting the framework’s potential to revolutionize the construction industry by enabling precise, consistent, and durable component production.
