Physiological Monitoring Systems and Wearable Sensing Devices for Construction Safety: Deployment Challenges and Research Roadmap
Abstract
Construction is one of the most hazardous industries to work for, necessitating proactive safety measures to ensure safety of construction individuals. Recent advancements in physiological monitoring systems (PMSs) and wearable sensing devices (WSDs) have enabled real-time, continuous, and objective safety monitoring. However, despite their increased benefits, PMSs and WSDs face several challenges that hinder their widespread adoption. This study presents a systematic literature review to identify these challenges, which were categorized into three areas: (1) data collection and processing challenges, (2) hardware challenges, and (3) user-related challenges. The study also proposes a research roadmap to address these challenges. The study contributes to the body of knowledge by guiding researchers and practitioners on key focus areas to overcome existing PMS and WSD challenges, ultimately ensuring the successful integration and widespread adoption of these technologies on construction sites.
