Abstract

This case study examines CRH’s successful decade-long journey in enhancing workplace safety (2014–2023). By strategically implementing Continuous Improvement Operations (CIO) methodologies—Lean, 5S, Just-in-Time (JIT), Jidoka, and Kaizen—CRH achieved a significant 57% reduction in accident frequency, decreasing from 2.1 to 0.9 incidents per million manhours. This improvement also translated to substantial cost savings, with OSHA-estimated accident costs falling from $22.66 to $10.03 million. Furthermore, strategic safety investments totaling $469.58 million yielded a return on investment exceeding 17% in subsequent years. The study underscores how CRH’s systematic, data-driven, and employee-focused safety strategies not only bolstered operational stability but also fostered a proactive safety culture. Ultimately, CRH’s progress offers a roadmap for integrating continuous improvement practices to achieve tangible safety and financial benefits with a scalable blueprint within industrial settings.
