Abstract

Calcium carbide residue (CCR) has recently been recognized as an effective stabilizer for improving the strength of marine clays owing to its hydration reaction in the presence of water. This study uses a recently developed concrete material model, which is available in several commercial finite element codes, to simulate the time-dependent changes in the strength and stiffness of the clay with the above cementitious additives. Strain hardening and softening, creep, and shrinkage of the CCR stabilized soils could reasonably be predicted by its use. The concrete model could accurately correlate to the post peak response, which could not be achieved by the use of other conventional models.
