Abstract

Abstract The main objective of this paper is to analyze the performance of blast-resistant precast insulated wall panels using a beam-spring modeling (BSM) approach. Whereas such computational models have become increasingly popular for the design against conventional loads, they have not yet received widespread option for blast-resistant design. Therefore, the framework presented herein will outline a general procedure for implementing the partially-composite flexural resistance function of a panel into an enhanced generalized single-degree-of-freedom analysis. The feasibility of this framework is demonstrated by comparing analytical inbound displacement versus time histories with those measured during experimental blast tests. The results show the BSM generated partially-composite response often facilitates more reliable peak displacement estimates. However, remaining discrepancies still exist, likely explained by the lack of dynamic increase factors for wythe connectors and insulation bond/friction in shear. Theoretical dynamic reaction forces are also compared with connection forces measured during the tests, demonstrating that assuming fully-composite section behavior for this purpose can facilitate conservative connection designs. In general, the proposed framework shows potential to provide a streamlined, computational link between beam-spring modeling methods and blast-resistant design of these walls.
