Abstract

Rainfall can significantly affect slope stability, often triggering failures by increasing pore pressure and altering soil properties. Understanding these effects is important for designing stable slopes, especially given varying climate conditions. This study focuses on stabilizing slopes using piles, particularly assessing the impact of footing placement at the crest and the effects of rainfall-induced soil infiltration. Initially, the research identifies the optimal footing position on the crest and most effective pile locations under dry conditions. With the optimum crest footing position established (b/B=2), this study determines the best possible position of the pile to maximize the factor of safety (FOS) under rainfall infiltration conditions. The results suggests that after rainfall infiltration the most optimum position of pile shifts from upper middle part of the slope to the middle part for different slope inclinations. These insights are crucial for designing slopes stabilized with piles, especially when footings are placed at the crest and exposed to rainfall-induced infiltration. This study combines structural and hydrological factors to improve slope stabilization. It highlights the importance of flexible design methods that adapt to environmental changes and ensure effective pile placement for greater stability. This research also highlights the importance of continuous monitoring and adjustment of slope stabilization measures to ensure long-term effectiveness in the face of climate variability. In aligning with United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 11, which seeks to make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable, this study underscores the vital role of innovative geotechnical engineering in safeguarding infrastructure against environmental changes and enhancing urban resilience.
