Abstract

Statistics is a universal discipline, as both the Arts and Science branches utilize it at a higher level in academics and research. Generally, every researcher, regardless of their field, utilises statistical tools and techniques. Recently, the use of statistics has increased in public health and life sciences also. Biostatistics is a branch of statistics that deals with problems in the biological sciences. In other words, the application of statistical methods to biological methods is said to be ‘Biostatistics’. Thus, biostatistics broadly deals with statistical applications in the context of biological problems, including those related to medicine and public health. This discipline developed between 1822 and 1911 under the guidance of Sir Francis Galton, who is known as the father of biometry and eugenics. So, measurement of biological aspects is known as ‘Biometrics’ and hence, the terms ‘biostatistics’ and biometry’ are synonymously used. The importance of biostatistics within public health lies in analysing the rates of diseases or infections within targeted populations in our areas. The biostatistical analysis proved helpful in determining various medical and biological aspects related to population age, gender, or ethnic group. The use of biostatistics within the health services helps in making informed decisions to improve patient care and enhance health or medical research, while supporting the available data. The primary objective of this study is to analyse the role of biostatistics within the public health sector, with special reference to certain health centres in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh. The author collected primary data from various Health centres in Visakhapatnam city and also utilized secondary data from various sources, including government reports, journals, books, and magazines. For analysis purposes, suitable statistical tools and methods are used in this research study. The major findings of the study are that the use of Biostatistics in public health centres has increased, enabling them to diagnose health problems accurately and effectively, and treat them in a beneficial manner, providing patients with positive relief from their struggles. And also have been able to suggest appropriate medicines.
