Abstract

Increasing concerns regarding plastic waste and environmental degradation have stimulated research on bio-based and biodegradable materials. Significant attention has been directed towards nanocellulose owing to its availability, biodegradability, and favorable mechanical properties. Nanocellulose-based biocomposites represent a feasible alternative for the production of functional and sustainable materials for widely engineering applications. This article review on chitosan and cellulose, together with their structures, properties, and the impact of cellulose utilization as reinforcement for chitosan biocomposites in various applications, particularly in tissue engineering. These polysaccharides are extensively utilized in tissue engineering for their capacity to replicate the extracellular matrix of tissues. Furthermore, these macromolecules exhibit superior biocompatibility and reduced toxicity relative to synthetic polymers.
