Abstract

An accurate assessment of the spatial and temporal variations in soil moisture is crucial for a variety of environmental research. There are several methods for estimating or monitoring soil moisture that can provide data on a large or small scale regions. This study attempted to review a several studies conducted to determine soil moisture, either using traditional field methods or using satellite image data. The results showed that traditional standard field methods cannot observe the temporal variation in soil moisture on a large scale area. Consequently, satellite imagery, which has developed greatly in recent years, has been used in recent several studies to determine soil moisture on a large scale using available satellite image data that provides continuity and complete information across broad regions.
