Evaluating the accuracy of high-altitude 3D models using an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV): An overview study
Abstract
Recently, there has been an urgent need to obtain accurate and detailed data with the least possible time and effort from photogrammetry. Photogrammetry plays an important role in various fields including civil engineering, agriculture, heritage, etc. Photogrammetry depends on many parameters that have an impact on the accuracy of the extracted three-dimensional model. Therefore, creating a 3D model using photogrammetry technology without the parameters that affect the model extracted from Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) has been studied by many researchers. This study conducted a comprehensive review of relevant literature associated with four distinct parts. The first part includes a review of the literature related to the possibility of creating a 3D model. The second part includes studies regarding the significance of the number and pattern of distribution of CPs at different locations and purposes. The third part explains the analysis of the accuracy of the photogrammetry model taken from UAVs. The last part of this chapter reviews the importance of UAVs in several different dams. The results showed that UAV is considered one of the most important current photogrammetry techniques for scanning large areas. Due to its ability to reach high and difficult locations in addition to the ability to repeat the survey in a short time. The importance of drones lies in documenting engineering features such as dams and achieving accuracy appropriate to the purpose used, more than other technologies. However, researchers must expand their knowledge of the accuracy reached by the model extracted from drones at high altitudes, especially on structures such as dams.
