Abstract

One of the most significant adverse effects of poorly planned industrialization is the pollution of our environment, leading to a decline in the quality of life. Noise pollution has emerged as a critical environmental issue in numerous rapidly urbanizing regions. This concern is often overlooked, despite its steady increase in developing nations. The noise generated from various sources has become an unwelcome byproduct of contemporary living and is rising at an alarming pace. Over the past three decades, noise levels have surged across all areas, particularly in urban settings. Coimbatore City, recognized for its swift urbanization and industrial growth, is experiencing a concerning increase in noise levels. Consequently, an investigation has been conducted to assess the environmental noise levels within Coimbatore City. This study presents the noise levels recorded at different locations throughout the city, including commercial, residential, industrial, and quiet zones. A Digital Sound Level Meter (Make: Larson and Davis) was utilized for this assessment. All measurements were taken during peak hours and under standardized conditions. The recorded noise levels were compared against the Noise Standards set forth by the Noise Pollution (Regulation and Control) Rules, 2000, allowing for the identification of noise risk zones. Various noise control measures have been proposed for these identified risk zones.
