Stabilization of expansive soils with the application of soil reinforcements, geotextiles, and geomembranes reinforced in diverse configurations: A comparative study
Abstract
This research compares soil properties in their original form to the soil that has been remedied using reinforced polyethylene, wire mesh, steel wool, high-density polyethylene (HDPE) sheet, and fibre glass geomembranes. Basic soil attributes such as strength parameters were estimated for natural situations such as clay and red soil. At one-third, top, and random/mixed orientations, the clay and red soil were supplemented with wire mesh, steel wool, geotextile, and geomembranes. The results show that the strength of fibre glass geomembranes for red soil exhibits excellent performance when oriented randomly. Since clayey soils contain a high moisture level, geotextile was the superior option because it absorbs water from clay-rich soils, stiffening them and increasing the soil’s load-bearing capacity. As a result of this research, the study believes that expansive soils can be stabilized by using soil reinforcements, geotextiles, and geomembranes.
