Fabrication of Al6061-SiC matrix composites using the squeeze casting method
Abstract
The development of reinforced aluminum matrix composites (AMCs) with ceramic materials, including Silicon Carbide (SiC), has great promise for use in industries like aerospace and automotives that demand high mechanical qualities. In this study, an innovative squeeze casting method was employed to fabricate SiC-reinforced AMCs, aimed at enhancing the composite’s microstructural integrity and mechanical strength. The aluminum alloy AA6061 was used as the matrix material, while SiC As reinforcement, At different weight fractions (5%, 10%, and 15%), particles with an average size of 10 µm were added. This study demonstrates the effectiveness of the squeeze casting method in producing SiC-reinforced AMCs with superior mechanical properties. The optimal reinforcement fraction of 10% SiC offers a balanced improvement in strength and hardness without significantly compromising ductility, making it a viable candidate for high-performance applications. Further investigation into optimizing processing parameters and reinforcement sizes is recommended to enhance composite performance.
