Optimizing temperature and pressure conditions for enhanced methanol production
Abstract
Indonesia heavily relies on fossil fuels such as coal, oil, and natural gas, contributing to CO2 emissions and climate change. Aquatic biomass, specifically seaweed like Porphyra (red algae), offers a promising renewable energy alternative. Porphyra is rich in carbohydrates (47.7%), which significantly aid in the production of syngas (85%) in large quantities. Porphyra can be converted into syngas via gasification routes. The H2/CO ratio of the syngas is sensitive to the operating condition and gasifying agents. On the other hand, the H2/CO ratio determines the methanol production. Apart from the H2/CO ratio, temperature and pressure significantly affect methanol production. This study aims to determine the optimal conditions of temperature, and pressure required for efficient methanol production to enable the conversion of Porphyra biomass into methanol, contributing to the transition from non-renewable fuels to sustainable energy sources.
