Fabrication of aluminum matrix composites reinforced with Al2O3 using the squeeze casting method: Microstructural analysis and mechanical properties
Abstract
The development of aluminum matrix composites (AMCs) reinforced with ceramic materials, including aluminum oxide (Al2O3), has great promise for use in industries like aerospace and automotives that demand high mechanical qualities. In this study, an innovative squeeze casting method was employed to fabricate Al2O3-reinforced AMCs, aimed at enhancing the composite’s microstructural integrity and mechanical strength. The aluminum alloy AA6061 was used as the matrix material, while Al2O3 as reinforcement, particles with an average size of 10 µm were added. at varying weight fractions (5%, 10%, and 15%). This study demonstrates the effectiveness of the squeeze casting method in producing Al2O3-reinforced AMCs with superior mechanical properties. The optimal reinforcement fraction of 10% Al2O3 offers a balanced improvement in strength and hardness without significantly compromising ductility, making it a viable candidate for high-performance applications. Further investigation into optimizing processing parameters and reinforcement sizes is recommended to enhance composite performance.
