Testing the potential yield of several polinela single cross and double cross hybrid corn strains
Abstract
One strategy to increase national corn production includes developing new hybrid corn lines or varieties that have the potential for high yields. Polinela breeders have currently assembled several hybrid corn lines whose performance needs to be tested. The aim of this research was to test the potential and several agronomic characteristics of five single cross hybrid corn lines and five double cross hybrid corn lines. Treatments were arranged in a Randomized Completely Block Design (RCBD). The treatments consisted of five single cross hybrid corn lines and five double cross hybrid corn lines. The quantitative variables observed were maximum plant height, harvest age, number of ears per plant, ear length, ear diameter, number of rows of seeds per ear, weight of 100 seeds, seed yield per plant, seed yield per hectare, and qualitative characters, namely the color of the stem base., the color of the silk, the color of the tassel. The data is analyzed using variance, if there is a difference between the mean values of the treatments tried then it is continued with the Least Significant Difference Test at the 5% level. The research results show (1) The productivity of single cross hybrid corn line A has the highest productivity compared to all double cross hybrid lines tested; (2) of the 12 phenotypic character variables observed quantitatively, 11 variables had high heritability estimates of more than 0.5, (3) the phenotype of single cross hybrids is more homogeneous than double crosses.
