Implementation of Taguchi L9 design for optimize laser machining parameters on SS 304 stainless steel
Abstract
Laser machining is a dry manufacturing technique that employs laser beam, with very high intensity, to create holes, engraved or to evaporate material. It is a widely used technique in aerospace, automotive supply, medical and electronics sectors because it has the capability to work on a variety of substrates with high accuracy. The impact of laser machining parameters on the SS 304 metal was discussed in this current work. In this investigation, optimum cutting conditions that included laser power (140–180 W), spindle speed (1000–1400 rev/min), and depth of cut (0.3–0.7 mm) were determined by the Taguchi L9 design for maximizing material removal rate (MRR). The contour plot results suggest that the value of MRR is high when laser power is between 165- 175 W and spindle speed of 1100-1300 rev/min while depth of cut is at 0.35 mm. Based on S/N ratio, the highest value of MRR was achieved with 180 W laser power, 1400 rev/min spindle speed and 0.3mm DOC. The analysis of variance revealed that MRR is significantly affected by laser power with a variation contribution of 48.8%, depth of cut with a variation contribution of 37.37% and spindle speed with a variation contribution of 3.06%.
