Analyse the mechanical properties of kenaf-flax hybrid composites produced using the hand layup process
Abstract
This work is concerned with the preparation and characterization of kenaf/flax reinforced polymer matrix hybrid composites. The composites are made through the hand layup process with epoxy resin matrix material, LY556 epoxy resin and HY951 hardener. Fiber composition is changed to study the effect on the mechanical characteristics of the composite. ASTM standards are used to test the fabricated laminates, namely, tensile, flexural, impact, and hardness strengths out of all the laminates, the hybrid composite which is S3 (flax-kenaf) consisting of three layers each of flax and kenaf exhibit the highest mechanical performance. This laminate increases in tensile strength because of additional flax and kenaf fibers’ capacity for load transfer and a reduction in deformity. S3 has much higher flexural strength, proving its ability of bearing the flexural loads. Moreover, the impact strength values reveal the kind of energy absorption capacity and its capacity to withstand formation of crack under sudden loading characteristic of S3 for tougher applications. The test result of hardness also supports the structural aspect of hybrid composite. The study therefore provides a direction on how natural fiber such as kenaf and flax can be used in the development of hybrid composites for automotive applications.
