Abstract

This research discusses managing big data in the context of artificial intelligence (AI) within an Islamic university to support sustainable development. This research employed a qualitative paradigm with single case study. The data was gathered through field observation in the university Information Technology (IT) department and in-depth interviews with IT staff, the university leader, and the dean within the faculties. The data were analyzed using three stages of coding, beginning with open coding, axial, and selective coding to build themes from empirical data. The findings of this research indicate the university needed to align its big data management with the AI era. We found that the university information technology (IT) center needed more support from the top leader. The IT department needed more technology infrastructure, a lack of human resource skills to deal with flooded data, a lack of management change to adjust to the big data and AI era, and the organizational culture needed to adapt to a new big data management strategy. Further research should focus on other external factors influencing a university to manage data according to big data and AI development.
