Abstract

This systematic literature review aims to understand the role of technology in English proficiency mapping for higher education during the period of 2020-2024. The research is covering some analysis on the journal publications, Scopus index, types of articles, research trends, topics of interest, and research gaps exist in the articles analysed. PRISMA literature review framework was used to select the articles, leaves 19 articles that met the inclusion criteria. Findings include (1) four practical implications and four affective factors, (2) technologies used i.e., AI and machine learning, blockchain, interactive and adaptive tools, social networking and multimedia, and mobile applications, (3) data collection method trend is the test/assessment method, which leads to the most used data analysis is the test score analysis using technology, (4) methods used are personal and collaborative tools, structured teaching models, automated systems, and mathematical models, and (5) research experimental design is done by almost all researchers to test their methods. Research gaps found are (1) all English proficiency mappings are treated as the final test or specially designed tests for the research purposes only, there is no article found that prepares the test as a preliminary action to determine the levels and map the student’s personal English proficiency, (2) no researches discuss the method of getting the proficiency data from the perspective of affective-cognitive point of view, and (3) there are several steps and methods done separately to get one type of data, there are no articles that designed the research in one stop testing model.
