Abstract

One main feature of holy Quran is the apparent similarity among its verses. Gathering the most textually similar verses to a given verse would be very useful for those who are interested in pondering and interpreting Quran. In this paper, the well-known longest common subsequence algorithm is used to quantitatively measure textual similarity between a pair of Quranic verses. This measure is used to construct an ordered vector of all Quranic verses according to their similarity to a given verse. Similarity vectors are constructed for every Quranic verse and the topmost elements of these vectors are output to a dictionary. This dictionary gathers for every Quranic verse, the textually most similar verses to it. A number of algorithms to generate such a dictionary are designed, implemented and a sample of the results found is presented.
