Engineering smart materials: Innovations in functional and self-healing materials
Abstract
The purpose of this research is to explore and advance the development of functional and self-healing materials within the field of smart materials. These materials enable built-in functions to react to environmental stimuli and self-heal, and apply advancements for a wide range of sectors. These changes cover additions of functional properties as electrical, thermal and mechanical in addition to self-healing properties envisioned to dramatically enhance the lifespan of the material. The work describes several new synthesis and fabrication methods that prove superior to conventional systems in terms of material performance. Furthermore, the study focuses on the other healing processes as a way of reducing material degradation such as intrinsic and extrinsic healing. The study points out that smart materials demonstrated good performance in practice in aerospace engineering, automotive industry, and biomedical engineering, where the effective functionality and endurance of materials are valued. Since positions of present work depict the real conditions of used materials, detail characterization tools such as SEM, TEM, and XRD followed the present work and offer successful healing efficiency in practical conditions. The novelty of this work is in the applicability of the developed approach for the transformation of material science with solutions focused at decreasing maintenance expenses and increasing sustainability.
