Fiber to the building - Giga passive optical network (FTTB-GPON) architecture based on multiplexing VCSEL optical sources with EM/DD: Design, implementation
Abstract
The FTTB network is based on the giga passive optical network (GPON) technology and provides services at reasonable costs. Except for the central offices and customer premises, the network exclusively uses passive technology. Most operators use GPON-based FTTB networks because they are flexible enough to accommodate future technological and service improvements. In this paper, an FTTB network using WDM-GPON bidirectional access with an external modulation/direct detection (EM/DD) using a VCSEL (vertical cavity surface emitting laser) light source is implemented and analyzed according to the thermal effects. The system is proposed as a partial network design solution at the College of Engineering, Al-Mustansiriya University, Baghdad, Iraq. The design is based on a symmetric bit rate with two channels each containing two blocks, each containing three blocks, as standardized in the ITU-T G.984.6 specification. A bit rate of 2.5 Gbps per channel is achieved over a distance of 10 km. The results showed that the 2.5 Gbps quantity factor without thermal effects is higher than the value with thermal effects. The quantity factor decreased with increasing temperature.
