Abstract

The short-horned grasshopper (Oxya hyla hyla) is a major polyphagous insect pest that causes extensive damage to crops. Pest control with synthetic insecticides is hazardous. Botanical insecticides are natural compounds produced from plants that have insecticidal capabilities and can be used as an effective alternative to synthetic pesticides. The insecticidal and repellent properties of methanolic extracts of leaves of Calotropis gigantea, Syzygium aromaticum, Annona muricata, Datura metal, and Eucalyptus globulus were investigated at various doses (1% and 3%). The percentage of death was measured after 1, 2, and 3 days when grasshoppers were treated with a topical application approach. Annona muricata had the highest mortality rate, while Calotropis gigantean had the lowest mortality rate at both concentrations. The choice experiment was conducted to investigate the percentage repellency. Repellency was measured for 60, 120, and 180 minutes following treatment. Syzygium aromaticum exhibited 100% repellency at both concentrations.
