Application of Rayleigh distribution for micro-wind turbine prediction: A case study on wind energy potential in Gorakhpur district at 10m height
Abstract
Given the dramatic increase in energy use and the need for sustainable solutions, research into renewable resources has become crucial. In this study, the potential for wind energy at 10m above ground level in the Gorakhpur region of Uttar Pradesh, India, is assessed using the Rayleigh distribution. The study’s objectives are to anticipate wind power density (WPD) and identify the best micro-wind turbines (MWTs) in the region. The Rayleigh parameter scale variable was determined by analyzing monthly wind speed data from the NASA POWER database from 1984 to 2023. After determining the probability density function and wind power density, the MWT models are selected based on their specifications. The findings complement the goals of sustainable development by highlighting the possibility of localized wind energy solutions in the region. With an estimated WPD of 29.539W/m2, the study establishes the foundation for expanding the use of renewable energy in semi-urban areas. This indicates that Class 1 wind resources have the potential for small-scale distributed generation applications.
