Abstract

This chapter focuses on the interrelationship of globalization and tourism, applying globalization theory to understand its sociocultural, economic, political, technological, environmental, health, and safety effects. It highlights how global interconnectedness has transformed tourism, emphasizing sustainability, cultural preservation, and economic integration. Globalization theory illustrates tourism’s role in cultural exchange, economic development, and international travel while also addressing challenges such as cultural commodification and environmental damage. Historically, tourism globalization evolved through trade, industrial progress, digital innovation, and sustainable practices. Socioculturally, theory of globalization fosters cultural exchange but raises concerns about authenticity. Economically, it connects local businesses to global markets. Politically, globalization theory supports worldwide mobility through liberalized policies, but creates issues such as overtourism and political influences on tourism marketing. Technological advances, including smart tourism and digital platforms, reshape tourist behavior and marketing. Globalization theory emphasizes sustainable practices to combat climate change and resource depletion. Future research should focus on sustainability, explore artificial intelligence (AI) and blockchain, and find ways to balance global tourism with cultural preservation while tackling environmental challenges and health crises.
