Abstract

In the new globalized world, competition has become a central issue for the tourism and hospitality industry as well as other industries. Though there are alternative strategies, Michael Porter’s groundbreaking five competitive forces framework is considered one of the most influential analytical tools. This chapter focuses on an overview of the five forces framework, its applications in the tourism and hospitality industry, and criticisms raised in the literature. The chapter concludes by considering some important points to keep in mind, with a reminder that the tourism and hospitality industry has suffered from inadequate research on the framework.
