Abstract

The Heliozelidae are mostly day-flying microlepidoptera with a significant yet underappreciated presence in the Australian landscape. Commonly known as shield-bearers, they are part of the superfamily Adeloidea. Australia is a key region for their diversity, offering important insights into their evolution and ecology. Some species of Heliozelidae have formed unique pollination relationships with their host plants. Recent studies highlight the diversity of both genera and species in the southern hemisphere, suggesting a likely evolutionary origin in the Australian region. This chapter discusses key Australian genera, providing an overview of the diversity and ecological roles of the heliozelid fauna in Australia.
