Abstract

Artificial intelligence (AI) is transforming agriculture through its integration into crop design, fostering precision, sustainability, and resilience. This chapter focuses on the revolutionary possibilities of AI within crop improvement, focusing on its ability to predict growth, health, and yield based on minimal input data. Advanced machine learning algorithms, developed from huge quantities of crop pictures and phenotypic traits, will simulate future growth trajectories and optimize resource allocation. For example, AI tools can evaluate one image of a young plant to predict its development under varying environmental conditions, offering actionable insights for fertilization, irrigation, and pest control strategies. Through applications such as genomic selection and phenotypic prediction, AI accelerates breeding cycles by identifying superior genotypes and linking genetic markers to desirable traits. Moreover, AI-driven systems enhance decision making by processing current information from Internet of Things sensors, allowing exact assessment of soil conditions and nutrient levels, as well as climatic factors. These innovations not only increase crop output but also decrease ecological impact by minimizing resource waste. The chapter also highlights challenges in adopting AI for crop design, including the difficulties of integrating diverse datasets with the necessity for user-friendly interfaces for landowners. Collaborative approaches, such as participatory AI frameworks, are proposed to ensure inclusivity and adaptability across different agricultural contexts. By bridging the separation across computational power and applications in reality, AI holds immense promise for reimagining crop design to address the needs of a world population that is growing sustainably.
