Abstract

Small family farms are fundamental to sustainable agriculture, significantly contributing to global food security, rural livelihoods and poverty reduction. Representing over 80% of farms worldwide, they are characterized by their small size, reliance on family labour, and integration of farm and household activities. They often achieve higher land productivity but struggle with lower labour productivity due to resource constraints and reliance on manual practices. They play a pivotal role in producing staple and high-value crops, managing natural resources sustainably and fostering resilience in rural economies. They face numerous challenges, especially limited access to resources and markets, and climate change impacts. Addressing these challenges requires targeted support, including market integration; adopting climate-smart practices and accessing technology, financial services and advisory support. Differentiated approaches and policies that cater to the specific needs and potential of various categories of these farms are essential for fostering innovation, enhancing profitability and promoting sustainability.
