Abstract

Modern farm management integrates decision making, resource optimization and business skills to enhance farm productivity and improve livelihoods. Modern approaches challenge traditional assumptions of inherent farmer efficiency, recognizing management as a skill that requires development. Core managerial tasks include setting objectives, allocating resources, making strategic and tactical decisions, and monitoring performance. The farm management cycle – diagnosis, planning, implementation, monitoring and evaluation – provides a structured approach to improving farm operations. Decision-making processes consider risk, market dynamics, and gender, ensuring equitable participation and sustainable outcomes. Entrepreneurship, alongside management, fosters innovation and resilience. Balancing economic viability, environmental sustainability and social responsibility is essential for long-term success of the small family farm. Practical frameworks guide farmers in navigating challenges, seizing opportunities and optimizing performance. Strengthening management capabilities and leveraging support services enables smallholder farmers to build resilient, profitable and sustainable agricultural enterprises.
