Abstract

Agricultural commercialization presents both opportunities and challenges for small family farmers, especially given the increasing dominance of agribusinesses and changing market demands. To remain competitive, smallholders must strengthen farm business management skills, form strategic partnerships and adopt market-oriented strategies. Farmer organizations and cooperatives enhance resource pooling, improve access to inputs and strengthen bargaining power. Contract farming and agribusiness linkages provide market access and technical support but require careful negotiation to avoid unfavourable terms. Horizontal and vertical linkages help integrate smallholders into wider market systems, while commodity associations and joint ventures foster collective action and shared benefits. Effective decision making, financial literacy and capacity building enable small farmers to navigate modern markets, improve productivity and ensure long-term sustainability. Strengthening governance, transparency, and investment strategies within farmer groups is essential for resilience and growth. By leveraging these strategies, small family farmers can transition from subsistence farming to sustainable, market-oriented farming in an increasingly commercialized agricultural sector.
