Abstract

Timely and reliable information is critical for effective farm management, influencing decisions on production, risk assessment and market engagement. Data, in its raw form, requires processing and contextualization to become actionable information that guides farmers toward better decision making. Information and communication technologies, mobile applications and ‘big data’ have transformed the agricultural landscape, offering tools that enhance productivity, improve market access and strengthen climate resilience. However, challenges such as digital literacy, infrastructure limitations, and data security must be addressed to maximize these benefits. Agricultural advisors play a vital role in facilitating access to, and interpretation of, information, ensuring smallholder farmers can leverage data for sustainable farm development. Integrating qualitative and quantitative data, alongside emerging technologies like AI and remote sensing, enables more precise resource allocation and risk management. Strengthening information networks empowers farmers to adapt to changing conditions, improve efficiency and increase profitability in competitive agricultural markets.
